PRESIDENTIAL PROGRAM UPDATE. Members of the Carter administration and current national figures headlining the January 2007 conference marking the 30th anniversary of President Jimmy Carter's inauguration will help explore how lessons from that administration can help inform policy discussions today.

CARTER MASTER TEACHERS. Three Georgia teachers have been awarded scholarships to attend the Carter Conference.

LEGISLATIVE OUTLOOK. The 25th Biennial Institute for Georgia Legislators provided newly elected and veteran members of the Georgia General Assembly with the opportunity to reflect on 50 years of legislative training and look ahead to the 2007 session.

UNDER STUDY. The National Center for the Study of Counties is launching a dissertation grant program to advance scholarly research on county-related issues.

INTERNATIONAL OUTREACH. The revised Web site for the International Center for Democratic Governance offer visitors easier access and new descriptions of the division's global outreach activities, including recent China and Republic of Georgia projects.

SMALL BUT NOTEWORTHY. The merger of the governments of Georgetown and Quitman County now gives Georgia the smallest consolidated government in the lower 48 states in terms of population.

CIVIC DUTY. More than 140 newly elected county commissioners gathered in Athens in December for training in their new jobs as public servants.

IMPACT MANAGEMENT. Big Canoe community residents consider incorporation.... The Fayetteville and Cumberland County consolidation study nears completion.... Dawson County requests a departmental review.... Doraville and Chamblee explore annexation options.

NEW PUBLICATIONS. The new Environmental Management Handbook for Georgia Local Government Officials will prove to be a valuable resource on local, state, and federal environmental compliance concerns and overall administration in key areas.... The thirteenth edition of the Handbook for Georgia Legislators is an extensive revision of the all-in-one guide to the legislative process in Georgia. Publication of the print version in February 2007 will reflect any rules changes enacted early in the 2007 session.... The Spanish version of the Institute's popular textbook An Introduction to Law in Georgia is now available at a special price.

POLICY NOTES. Two new policy notes in the Public Policy Research Series examine Deferred Contribution Benefit retirement plans and administrative license suspension.

GEORGIA ON MY MIND. A recent survey reveals that Georgians still see education as the state's most pressing issue. They also weighed in on the economy, health care, and other current issues.

FINANCIAL STATEMENT. A new Intermediate Accounting course has been added to the online course curriculum of the Financial Management Program.

OUTSTANDING OUTREACH. Mary Stakes receives the President's Award from the Georgia Council for the Social Studies.... Rich Clark is part of a UGA faculty group who will study how individuals form opinions about poverty.... Steve Condrey is the new editor-in-chief of the journal Review of Public Personnel Administration.
