About Us

For more than 80 years, the Vinson Institute has worked with public officials throughout Georgia and around the world to improve governance and people's lives. From Georgia's early days as a largely agrarian state with a modest population to its modern-day status as a national and international force in business, industry, and politics with a population of almost 10 million, the Institute has helped government leaders navigate change and forge strong directions for a better Georgia.

Spotlight: Stakes Receives Stewardship Award from Archaeology Group

Vinson Institute civic education specialist Mary Stakes, right, accepts the George Lewis Archaeological Stewardship Award from Betsy Shirk, left, president of the Society for Georgia Archaeology, at the group's annual meeting in Savannah on April 16 and 17.

In her remarks, Stakes noted her belief that archaeologists and preservationists excel in practicing stewardship every day. "It is my desire that as school children are drawn in to the study of archaeology, they also are taught and hopefully learn to become practicing stewards and ultimately good citizens," she stated.

Stakes was presented with the award in recognition of her archaeological outreach to Georgia's students, teachers, policy makers, and the general public.
