For more than 80 years, the Vinson Institute has worked with public officials throughout Georgia and around the world to improve governance and people's lives. From Georgia's early days as a largely agrarian state with a modest population to its modern-day status as a national and international force in business, industry, and politics with a population of almost 10 million, the Institute has helped government leaders navigate change and forge strong directions for a better Georgia.

Three of the six winners of the 2005 Walter B. Hill Awards from the University of Georgia are faculty members of the Vinson Institute. Shown here left to right at the January 27 awards luncheon are Gordon Maner, Mark Foster, and Steve Dempsey.

The Hill awards honor distinguished achievement in public service and outreach. Maner manages the Local Government Training Programs unit at the Vinson Institute and has been instrumental in developing and administering a wide range of instructional opportunities for the thousands of local officials and personnel who participate each year. Foster is recognized nationally for creating a solid program of employment testing services technical assistance for such public sector organizations as law enforcement and fire departments. Dempsey's expertise in strategic planning and facilitation has enabled communities and other entities to solve complex problems and create direction and vision.
