Spotlight: First Class Graduates: New Legislative Leadership Institute
A select group of 25 members of the Georgia General Assembly recently completed the first Georgia Legislative Leadership Institute. The attendees were nominated by the House and Senate leadership. The program is designed to equip newer lawmakers with the skills and knowledge required to be successful in the legislative environment that exists today, according to Jim Ledbetter, Vinson Institute director.
“The future of the legislature depends upon the quality and creativity of the men and women who can move beyond conflict and partisanship to resolve complex issues,” Ledbetter explains. The first session in June focused on personal leadership skills development. Another session in October gave participants the opportunity to see how their skills could be applied to issues currently facing the state.
The Georgia Legislative Leadership Institute is sponsored by the Vinson Institute and the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation. It is an extension of the Vinson Institute’s nationally recognized training and orientation program for legislators, which has been conducted since 1958.
