Civic Education Program Selects Carter Master Teachers
Three Georgia secondary school teachers have been awarded scholarships to attend The Carter Presidency: Lessons for the 21st Century conference January 19-21 at the University of Georgia's Center for Continuing Education. The national conference spotlights the 30th anniversary of Carter's presidential inauguration and is cosponsored by the university's Carl Vinson Institute of Government and School of Public and International Affairs.
The Carter Master Teachers are Christine Pratt-Consoletti, an eighth-grade Georgia studies teacher at Harris County-Carver Middle School; Steven Wang, a U.S. history and government teacher at North Hall High School; and Nadine Wright, an honors social studies teacher at Elbert County Comprehensive High School. The scholarship opportunities were coordinated by the Vinson Institute's civic education program.
The conference will feature discussions of policy developed during the Carter Presidency and its implications for today. President and Mrs. Carter will take part along with others who held key leadership roles at the time, explains Mary Stakes, Vinson Institute civic education director. "This is a unique opportunity for dedicated teachers to enrich their knowledge of not only Jimmy Carter's place in history but of national and world events during his presidency and today," she states. The three educators will be sharing what they learn with both their students when they return home and with teacher-colleagues at a special workshop during the 2007 fall conference of the Georgia Council for the Social Studies, she adds.
