A record number of Georgia tax officials were in Athens May 13-16 for their 45th annual institute that is coordinated by the Vinson Institute's Governmental Training, Education, and Development Division. There were more than 500 participants, reports Judy Wilson, Vinson Institute conference coordinator. The instructional program is sponsored by the Georgia Association of Tax Officials (GATO) and the Georgia Department of Revenue.

Conference sessions allow the officials to get updated on important new requirements and procedures and take specific courses relevant to their duties, explains Wilson. Data and internet security, bankruptcy filing procedures, dealing with the media, preparing the tax digest, and mobile home delinquent taxes were some of the topics covered, along with several others related to motor vehicles.

Danny Powers, tax commissioner of Chatham County, was honored as the Tax Commissioner of the Year by his colleagues. Powers is also the incoming GATO president.
