The opportunity builds on the partnership between the Institute's International Center for Democratic Governance (ICDG) and the Sichuan Administrative Institute. For six years, ICDG has provided instruction for local and provincial government public managers at the Sichuan institution as part of its extensive Sino-American Joint Municipal Training Program. It was during one of those programs earlier in the year that Sichuan administrators discussed the prison officials' training with Jianfeng Wang, ICDG faculty member who coordinates the China program.
"The Georgia Department of Corrections has been one of our long-time state government clients," explains Jim Stephens, administrator of the Institute's Governmental Training, Education, and Development Division. "They were very receptive to the idea and are providing the specialized resources and experts to make this a successful learning experience for the Sichuan delegation."
A total of 100 Sichuan prison officials divided into three groups will participate in the educational program, with the first arriving on July 8. They will be based at the DOC's Georgia Public Safety Training Center in Forsyth. The agenda will be a mix of lectures by experienced professionals, discussions, and site visits to maximum security, correctional, womens', and juvenile facilities.
