Michael D. Beck was recently chosen as the new director of the Vinson Institute's International Center for Democratic Governance (ICDG), according to Vinson Institute Director Steve Wrigley. Beck is scheduled to assume his new role in early August.

Since 2003, Beck has served as executive director of the University of Georgia's Center for International Trade and Security (CITS), part of the School of Public and International Affairs.

In that position, Beck has overseen programs on export control, weapons of mass destruction (WMD) security policies, and student training as well as CITS's business development and strategic-planning initiatives. In addition, Beck was instrumental in launching CITS's International Export Control Academy. Before becoming executive director, Beck was assistant director of CITS from 1998 to 2003.

Beck's field research and international outreach have taken him to 15 different countries. His intimate understanding of governance challenges in emerging democracies and his proven management of international programs made him an ideal candidate for ICDG's directorship.

"Mike Beck brings an outstanding record of outreach and scholarship in international work," said Wrigley. "He will build on the strong foundation at ICDG and add a wealth of experience to the Vinson Institute's faculty. I'm delighted he is joining us."

Beck hopes to build upon ICDG's well-established program.

"The team there has really done remarkable work in China, the former Soviet Union, and many other countries," said Beck. "My hope is to build on these past successes and leverage the strengths of the Vinson Institute and the university to build a program of national and international excellence."

To accomplish this goal, Beck plans to involve a wider range of faculty and build student involvement in ICDG's outreach programs.

"I will work to ensure that ICDG not only brings the best of Georgia to the world but that it brings the best of the world to Georgia," said Beck. "As Georgia becomes more of a global player, our state and community leaders will need to understand how other nations approach key issues of governance."

Beck holds a B.A. in international studies and Russian language from Emory University and an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Georgia. He speaks fluent Russian and Spanish.

Beck has authored, coauthored, or co-edited more than 20 publications. In addition to presenting at numerous scholarly and governmental conferences and workshops worldwide, he has coordinated and conducted training for domestic and foreign officials, industry representatives, and scientists.
