The Carl Vinson Institute of Government joins with others across Georgia who are mourning the passing of former Speaker of the House Thomas B. Murphy.

As a lifelong public servant, Speaker Murphy was dedicated to helping provide government that would result in improving the quality of life for all Georgians. As first a legislator and later as speaker, he was an active participant in and strong supporter of the Biennial Institute for Georgia Legislators, an instructional program coordinated by the Vinson Institute since 1958. His impact on the ability of state government to serve its citizens is a lasting one.
