About Us

For more than 80 years, the Vinson Institute has worked with public officials throughout Georgia and around the world to improve governance and people's lives. From Georgia's early days as a largely agrarian state with a modest population to its modern-day status as a national and international force in business, industry, and politics with a population of almost 10 million, the Institute has helped government leaders navigate change and forge strong directions for a better Georgia.

Institute Announces New State Leadership Training Opportunities

Posted March 24, 2008

The Vinson Institute has expanded its state government training to encompass all four programs of the State Personnel Administration's (SPA) Georgia Leadership Institute.

The Vinson Institute had already trained approximately 300 state executives in 10 classes of SPA's Executive Leadership Program, according to Wes Wynens, state government instructional programs manager. "Gov. Perdue has placed high priority on the importance of leadership in moving the state forward, and we are excited about this opportunity to continue working with SPA to assist with that directive."

The three other programs are Introduction to Leadership, Leading Others, and Leading Organizations, explains Sid Johnson, Vinson Institute Atlanta office faculty member who is coordinating the training agenda. "All the classes will be conveniently located in the Twin Towers Building in downtown Atlanta, and participants will be able to earn continuing education units because of the Vinson Institute's connection to the University of Georgia."

Introduction to Leadership focuses on personal leadership skills development and is designed for newer front-line managers and staff who have been identified for their leadership potential. Leading Others helps supervisors who are already actively involved in the delivery of state services learn the skills for developing successful work teams. The Leading Organizations curriculum is set up to equip middle-level managers with the skills needed to be active participants in major organizational processes. "All four of these intensive learning programs use a combination of discussions, learning activities, assessments, and development projects," Johnson emphasizes.

"The Vinson Institute has extensive experience in leadership development, and we look forward to working together in positioning Georgia's state government leaders to better meet the complex challenges of today and the future," states Steve Stevenson, SPA commissioner.
