Chancellor Offers Higher Education Outlook At Biennial
Erroll Davis, chancellor of the University System of Georgia (USG), remarked that the state's history regarding higher education is one of responding to difficult situations but always with an eye on the future. He delivered his comments in a speech on Monday, December 8, at the 26th Biennial Institute for Georgia Legislators in Athens.
Davis commended the General Assembly's long-term support of higher education while at the same time recognizing the need to deal with immediate budget concerns. (Hear Chancellor Davis's speech)
The Vinson Institute has conducted the Biennial Institute since 1958 under the co-sponsorship of the Office of the Lieutenant Governor and Office of the Speaker of the House. The event is a mix of instruction for newly elected lawmakers and policy sessions for all legislators on critical issues facing the state. This year's Biennial was held December 7–9 at the University of Georgia's Center for Continuing Education.
Monday's agenda also included timely presentations on the economy by David Wyss, senior economist with Standard and Poor's, and on Georgia's changing demographics by Steve Murdock, director of the U.S. Census Bureau. Afternoon policy panel sessions examined health policy, economic development, energy policy, human services reorganization, and child and family policy.
