Atlanta, Athens, Dalton, and Washington, D.C., were the destinations for 25 provincial and municipal managers from the Chinese capital, Beijing, February 1–14.

Participating in the Vinson Institute International Center's China Public Management Training Program, the Chinese delegation met with representatives from federal and local government agencies and civic groups. The International Center designed this program to help China's local leaders develop governments that are more efficient and responsive to the needs of their citizenry.

Interacting with and learning from the American public officials was a valuable aspect of the Beijing managers' training. Participants explored the diverse facets of American community life and government involvement through meetings with the mayors, county commissioners, county extension coordinators, and representatives from chambers of commerce, a downtown development authority, and a community arts program. They also toured local industry and a high school.

While in Washington, D.C., they met with representatives of the U.S. Departments of Agriculture and Housing and Urban Development and visited the U.S. Capitol Building.

Supplementing their busy schedule were glimpses into American culture with "American Experience" excursions such as touring historic Madison and Milledgeville and shopping in Commerce, Dawsonville, and Buford. The Beijing group also attended a UGA basketball game; visited Amicalola Falls State Park, Centennial Olympic Park, and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site; and took in the Smithsonian museums in D.C.

Since 1999, the Vinson Institute International Center has trained hundreds of public officials across China including the provinces and cities of Tianjin, Sichuan, Qinghai, Jiangxi, Shaanxi and Shanghai.
