About Us

For more than 80 years, the Vinson Institute has worked with public officials throughout Georgia and around the world to improve governance and people's lives. From Georgia's early days as a largely agrarian state with a modest population to its modern-day status as a national and international force in business, industry, and politics with a population of almost 10 million, the Institute has helped government leaders navigate change and forge strong directions for a better Georgia.

Local government officials know, as does the Vinson Institute, that planning and zoning issues are some of the most important to a community’s development—and also some of the most controversial. Vinson Institute training prepares board and commission members, staff, and elected officials to manage the planning and zoning process effectively.

Participants learn about the fundamental concepts of planning and zoning, such as land use, permits, and variances. They gain a more thorough understanding of the Zoning Procedures Law and the Georgia Planning Act.

The training also examines the process of creating policy. It delves into the responsibilities of boards and commissions, ethics, and meetings management. Trainers can discuss specific topics relating to individual boards or commissions.

The Vinson Institute is available to conduct training sessions in a city or county or through an area’s Regional Commission. A minimum of 20 participants is needed for a one-day training session, which can be achieved by governments co-hosting a class.
