More than 150 newly elected county commissioners are well positioned to lead their communities after participating in a special conference designed just for them by the Vinson Institute and the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG). “Leadership Starts Here” was the theme for the December 5-8, 2010, event held at the University of Georgia’s Center for Continuing Education in Athens.

Institute and ACCG officials designed a highly interactive agenda that offered a mix of sessions on both the essentials of governing daily and the characteristics and actions of progressive leaders. Topics covered included finances, county law, human resources, ethics, economic development, Georgia’s changing population, information technology, building consensus and teamwork, and creating a community vision.

Instructors included a mix of Vinson Institute faculty, ACCG staff, and government officials and administrators.

“The new county commissioners left this conference with a complete toolbox of knowledge and skills for leading effectively and being an informed team member of the board,” said Laura Meadows, director of the Institute’s Governmental Training, Education, and Development Division.

The Vinson Institute and ACCG partner to design and carry out dozens of training and development opportunities each year.
