In advance of what promises to be a challenging legislative session, Georgia lawmakers got a head start on exploring critical state issues and heard from Governor-elect Nathan Deal at the 27th Biennial Institute for Georgia Legislators, held at UGA’s Georgia Center for Continuing Education in Athens on December 12–14, 2010.

Since 1958, the Vinson Institute has coordinated the Biennial in partnership with the General Assembly.

In addition to introducing new legislators to their roles and responsibilities, the Biennial provides an opportunity for all legislators to prepare for the upcoming General Assembly session, noted Vinson Institute interim director Jennifer Frum (shown in photo).

Topics examined during the 2010 Biennial included the economic outlook, the tri-state water issues, the behavioral and mental health settlement, tax reform, the status of Georgia’s ports, health care reform, and ethics regulation.

University System of Georgia Chancellor Erroll Davis and Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Carol Hunstein also presented remarks. Long-time Atlanta news broadcaster John Pruitt offered an enlightening keynote address on changes in Georgia that he has witnessed throughout his career.
