About Us

For more than 80 years, the Vinson Institute has worked with public officials throughout Georgia and around the world to improve governance and people's lives. From Georgia's early days as a largely agrarian state with a modest population to its modern-day status as a national and international force in business, industry, and politics with a population of almost 10 million, the Institute has helped government leaders navigate change and forge strong directions for a better Georgia.

The Institute welcomes a new class of Vinson Fellows as spring semester begins at UGA. Four undergraduate students are spending the next few months getting an inside glimpse of the workings of state and local government and gaining valuable experience in preparation for careers in public service.

The Vinson Institute, the university’s Honors Program, and the UGA chapter of the Roosevelt Institute collaborate in selecting high-achieving students to participate in the hands-on study, research, and outreach of the Vinson Institute. The Fellows are paired with faculty mentors, whom they assist with their work.

In the current class of Fellows, Malin Dartnell and Calley Mersmann are working in the Institute’s Environmental Policy Program under the direction of Jason Evans and Rob McDowell. Dartnell is a junior from Madison, Georgia, majoring in environmental engineering. Mersmann is a senior ecology major from Snellville, Georgia.

Nathaniel Ament-Stone, a junior political science major from Savannah, Georgia, is working in the International Center with Rusty Brooks.

Camille Gregory is located in the Survey Research Unit with Rich Clark. She is a sophomore from Brentwood, Tennessee, majoring in geography.

For each Fellow, the semester’s work culminates in a final project that is presented to Institute faculty and staff.
