More than 600 Georgia city officials took advantage of 13 professional development opportunities during the 2011 Mayor’s Day conference, held January 22-24 in Atlanta. The annual event is sponsored by the Georgia Municipal Association, which partners with the Vinson Institute to carry out an extensive training program called the Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute.

Timely course offerings included lobbying, downtown development authorities, emergency management, planning and zoning, law enforcement services, open meetings/open records, citizen engagement, council-staff relations, human resources, and ethics. Conference participants also received a legislative update from state elected officials and attended policy committee meetings and workshops.

In addition, 130 city officials were recognized with certificates for completing various levels of the municipal training program. The required and elective courses enable city officials from all sized communities to develop professionally throughout their public service careers.
