Vinson Institute Awards Scholarships for New Shanghai Study Program
The Vinson Institute has selected three UGA undergraduate students as the first scholarship recipients in the new Shanghai Municipal Scholarship Summer School Fudan Program. The Shanghai Municipal Government and Fudan University awarded the scholarship opportunities to the Vinson Institute earlier this year.
“It is especially fitting for the Vinson Institute to support three scholarships in the Shanghai Municipal Scholarship Summer School Fudan Program,” said Steve Wrigley, UGA interim vice president for public service and outreach. “Over the last eleven years, our partnership has resulted in training for hundreds of Shanghai officials, academic opportunities for Fudan students and faculty, and cultural exchanges for UGA faculty and Georgia public officials. These scholarships build on that partnership and contribute to a greater global understanding among all those involved.”
Nathaniel Ament-Stone, Timothy Gray, and Serena Rutter will participate in a four-week experience this summer during which they will attend courses at Fudan University on Chinese language, history, government, economics, and culture. Each scholarship covers tuition, textbook fees, accommodations, meals, and cultural activities.
Ament-Stone, a junior political science major from Savannah, Georgia, is currently working in the Institute’s International Center as a Vinson Fellows intern. Gray is a senior from Commerce, Georgia, majoring in Chinese language and literature. Rutter is a sophomore linguistics major from Dacula, Georgia.
Since its beginnings in 1999 through a partnership with the Shanghai Administrative Institute and, subsequently, Fudan University, the Vinson Institute’s China Public Management Training Program has helped more than 1,200 municipal and provincial officials from seven provinces obtain the public administration knowledge and skills needed to build governments that are more efficient and responsive to citizens.
