Government finance officers looking for convenient and cost-effective ways to continue their professional development have benefitted in recent years from the Vinson Institute’s list of online course offerings—a list that has recently grown with the addition of a new course, Internal Controls: Accounts Payable and Cash Disbursements.

The course is a self-study, 30-day program that includes seven detailed lessons to help participants understand the fundamentals of internal controls.

"We are excited about this new course as we believe it will help governments evaluate the strength of their accounts payable functions and improve their control structures," said Tracy Arner, Financial Management Program Manager.

The course will fulfill elective requirements Level I or II certification in the Vinson Institute’s Local Finance Officer Certification Program. The courses can also serve as a continuing education activity for accounting professionals. Successful graduates of the course will receive 0.6 continuing education units (CEU) from the University of Georgia or 6 CPE, depending on their needs.

Accounts Payable complements another recently released course, Internal Controls: Accounts Receivable and Cash Receipts. These and other online courses, offered in partnership with the UGA Center for Continuing Education, allow participants to work at their own pace and reduce the travel costs associated with in-person instruction.

Additional online course offerings for financial management include
Introductory Governmental Accounting, Part I
Introductory Governmental Accounting, Part II
Intermediate Governmental Accounting
Treasury Management
Debt Administration
