Training at GMA Convention Tops 1,000
More than 1,000 elected and appointed municipal officials participated in Vinson Institute training courses at the 2011 Georgia Municipal Association Annual Convention in Savannah June 25–28. Attendees included mayors, city councilmembers, city managers, clerks, and others from around the state who honed their skills in a number of leadership and professional development opportunities.
The Institute unveiled three new courses for participants at the convention. Technology Solutions for Cities introduced officials to a number of ways technology can help cities improve service delivery, efficiency, and government transparency. Participants learned positive ways of involving the public in governance in Making Citizen Engagement Work in Our Communities. Recreation and Parks: Innovations and Best Practices looked into creative ways of developing and funding city recreation facilities.
At an awards presentation on Monday, June 27, GMA and the Vinson Institute recognized 90 elected officials for their commitment to continuing education through the Harold F. Holtz Municipal Training Institute. The officials received certificates of distinction, excellence, achievement, or recognition, based on the number of hours of instructional units they had completed.
