Institute Assists GDOT With Statewide Highway Performance Survey
The Institute's Office of Information Technology Outreach Services (ITOS) will soon hit the road to help the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) collect highway data throughout the state. The information obtained through the project will help GDOT comply with reporting requirements for the Federal Highway Administration's Highway Performance Monitoring System (HPMS).
ITOS's geographic information systems (GIS) experts will travel by van to 346 road segments around Georgia designated by the highway administration. Using a video- and GPS-capturing system, they will record data on road characteristics including highway width, pavement condition, number of lanes, widening obstacles, signage, percentage of green light time, median type, and more. Five regional commissions as well as a GDOT crew will assist ITOS in this effort by surveying an additional 442 road segments.
The highway administration will use the data and data from other states to evaluate the condition and operating characteristics of the nation's highways and to verify that federal transportation funds are being used effectively. HPMS submits a report to Congress every two years and is one of the tools used for apportioning Federal-aid Highway Program funds to states.
ITOS generates geographic data and develops a variety of GIS applications for state agencies, local governments, international organizations, and others. Their services help provide access for their customers to the information they need to make knowledgeable decisions. ITOS and GDOT enjoy an longstanding collaboration that includes the production a variety of state maps and helpful databases such as Georgia's Natural, Archaeological, and Historic Resources GIS (GNAHRGIS).
