International Center Continues Shanghai Outreach through Internships
The most recent cohort of Shanghai government administrative officials arrived in Athens, Georgia, on August 31 to participate in the International Center's Shanghai Executive Training Group Program. The interns will observe the functionality and organization of local governments in the United States and take classes in public finance and administration. The program, which began in 2009, enhances Georgia's diplomatic and economic connections to one of Asia's most dynamic cities.
The interns come from a variety of Shanghai government units. They are Haihong Yu, chairman, Business Committee of Shanghai Huangpu District; Yolanda Li, chief liaison, Shanghai Women's Federation; Jianjun Zhang, chief, Department of Construction and Administration, Committee of Shanghai Lingang Industrial Park; Jun Wang, chief, Department of Science and Education, Shanghai Civil Defense Department; and Quinzhong Zhu, deputy chief, Department of Medical Administration, Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau.
Two-hundred-and-fifty potential internship candidates were chosen from over 50,000 Shanghai administrators. Out of those, 23 were awarded internships at universities throughout the United States.
"Shanghai is a world-class city culturally and economically. This program allows us to develop fruitful relationships with people who manage various aspects of Shanghai government," said Dr. Rusty Brooks, director of the Vinson Institute's International Center.
The International Center's Shanghai Executive Training Group Program is carried out through a partnership between the International Center and the Shanghai Education Center for Administrators. The International Center aids nations in transition and enhances Georgia's global reach through instruction, assistance, and research in public administration best practices.
