Members of the House Natural Resources and Environment Committee participated in in-depth learning sessions about key environmental issues in Georgia during the first Legislative Environmental Policy Academy November 16¬–18 at Amicalola Falls State Park.

The Vinson Institute’s Environmental Policy Program coordinated the event, which it designed to be a resource for objective, balanced information to help lawmakers prepare for the complex environmental concerns coming before them during the legislative session. The policy academy gives members of the General Assembly the opportunity to remain current on these issues and consider them away from the politics of the capitol.

The representatives heard from experts and state agency leaders about solid waste management, electricity generation, recycling, natural gas, and alternative fuels. Speakers included representatives from the Army Corps of Engineers, the Environmental Protection Division, local government, utility providers, the University of Georgia, and others.

The R. Howard Dobbs Foundation provides funding for the policy academy, and legislators will be able to attend future academies twice yearly at state parks throughout Georgia.
