Municipal Officials Train and Earn Certificates at Mayor's Day
City elected officials from across the state engaged in training and received certificates in acknowledgement of their commitment to leadership development at the 2012 Mayor's Day conference January 21–23 in Atlanta. Additionally, Vinson Institute demographic expert Matt Hauer delivered a presentation during the closing session titled "Managing Local Government in Uncertain Times."
Approximately 750 city officials took advantage of the training opportunities available at the event, participating in classes ranging from the basics of taxation to planning and zoning. To those officials who had reached milestones in their professional development, the Vinson Institute presented Certificates of Distinction, Excellence, Achievement, and Recognition. The Institute also honored participants in the Robert E. Knox, Jr. Municipal Leadership Institute, which took place in September in Ringgold.
Hauer's presentation focused on the timely topic of demographic change in Georgia. He addressed how dynamic shifts in the state's population will have an impact in community planning for education, economic development, and government services. Guided by data from the 2010 Census as well as his own projections, Hauer provided insights into demographic trends along racial, age, and other characteristics so that participants could have a clearer vision of the future of Georgia.
