Mayors and Council Members Hone Policy-Making Skills During New Class Offering
Approximately 20 Georgia mayors and city council members visited the Vinson Institute to participate in a pilot class designed to teach elected municipal officials how to develop public policy that will benefit their communities and constituents through the effective use of policy-making models. The six-hour class titled Practical Public Policy was offered through the Institute's advanced training partnership with the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) and taught by the Institute's Walt McBride.
Class participants analyzed the hallmarks of ineffective public policy and engaged in group discussions about public policy challenges within their own municipalities. They were then introduced to effective policy-making models and gained a better understanding of the roles of elected officials and their staff in the public policy-making process. Participants also learned the benefits of data-driven decision making and discussed techniques for gathering data and identifying data sources.
