Institute Begins Career Readiness Project with Department of Education and Chamber
To help them hone their curriculum redesign efforts, the Georgia Department of Education (DOE) has begun a project with the Vinson Institute and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce to gain a better understanding of the skills needed in today's workforce. The Vinson Institute, working closely with DOE and the Chamber, will administer an online survey of business leaders throughout the state to learn what skills are in the greatest demand.
The project will help DOE redesign their Career, Technical, and Agricultural Education (CTAE) curriculum. The goal of the collaboration is to refine educational opportunities available to Georgia's students so that they leave high school career-ready.
Survey respondents will answer questions asking them to rate the importance of different soft skills and general business management skills. Then, they will self-select into predefined career clusters such as nursing, manufacturing, or education so that researchers can develop insights into the specific workforce needs of each cluster.
The Vinson Institute will present DOE with a report on the survey findings in August and will participate in facilitated discussions with business leaders to review and evaluate the survey results.
The career readiness project with DOE and the Chamber of Commerce is the latest example of the Institute's work with state agencies and other partners to help strengthen Georgia's competitiveness and promote long-term economic development. In 2011, the Institute worked closely with the Department of Economic Development and the Chamber of Commerce on the Georgia Competitiveness Initiative.
