Augusta's human resources department has enlisted Vinson Institute local government experts to conduct a structural review of the department and develop a best practices guide that will be a resource for improving organizational structure and improving procedural efficiency.

The Institute's Malik Watkins will lead the process by interviewing administrators, department heads, and staff about current Augusta human resources department structure and procedures. He will also study archival data, including financial documents, nonconfidential personnel and staffing data, written operational policies and procedures, and performance evaluations and audits.

Watkins will then compare Augusta's existing human resources structure and practices to current standards for human resources departments in similarly sized municipalities. He will draft a human resources best practices guide containing possible changes to the department's organizational structure, updated position descriptions, and comparable spending matrices.

The Institute provides customized assistance to local governments throughout Georgia on such issues as service delivery, tax equity, departmental organization, incorporation, and city-county consolidation. The Institute also delivers leadership and professional development training to local government officials across the state.
