About Us

For more than 80 years, the Vinson Institute has worked with public officials throughout Georgia and around the world to improve governance and people's lives. From Georgia's early days as a largely agrarian state with a modest population to its modern-day status as a national and international force in business, industry, and politics with a population of almost 10 million, the Institute has helped government leaders navigate change and forge strong directions for a better Georgia.

PhotoFour talented University of Georgia undergraduate students have begun working at the Vinson Institute as part of the Vinson Institute Fellows Program. This semester-long internship allows students to contribute to the Institute's assistance and training work for governments throughout the state. The program also gives the Fellows the opportunity to explore the possibility of future careers in public service.

Each semester, the Institute selects a cohort of Fellows from applicants on a competitive basis. The fall 2012 cohort includes Jack Dishner, Seth Taylor, Matt Tyler, and Jacqueline van de Velde. Jack Dishner is an international affairs major from Bedford Corners, New York. He will work with Betty Hudson from the Institute's local government services unit. Seth Taylor of Powder Springs is pursuing a double major in history and political science and has been paired with Anna Boling from the Institute's training division.

Matt Tyler will contribute to the Institute's Environmental Policy Program alongside his faculty-mentor Rob McDowell. Tyler is jointly pursuing bachelor's and master's degrees in political science and is from Atlanta. Jacqueline van de Velde of St. Simon's Island will assist Rusty Brooks, associate director of the International Center. Jacqueline is seeking a double major in English and international affairs.

Students interested in participating in the Fellows program in the future can contact coordinator Abigail Lloyd at abglloyd@uga.edu for more information.
