Institute Provides Planning and Zoning Training to Archway Professionals and Others
At a recent planning and zoning course delivered by the Vinson Institute, 18 individuals from UGA's Archway Partnership along with 9 others had the opportunity to learn more about important issues and strategies involved in community planning.
The Archway Partnership is a Public Service and Outreach unit of UGA that focuses resources and expertise from the university to help solve identified challenges in partnership with selected communities around the state. After a mayor and an Archway professional expressed interest to the Vinson Institute's Chrissy Marlowe about planning commission training, the Institute reached out to individuals from the Archway Partnership Communities about upcoming training opportunities.
Archway professionals from Clayton, Pulaski, Sumter, and Washington Counties attended the training. They were able to benefit from a wide range of information pertinent to their local economic development efforts. Participants reviewed planning commission responsibilities, requirements of zoning laws, standard land use practices, trends in housing, and key concepts such as variances and special use permits. They also discussed how to engage communities in planning decisions and the role of planning staff in community development.
The Vinson Institute provides specialized training to planning commissions, zoning boards, and other groups involved in economic development efforts. It also has courses available explaining the basics of historic preservation.
