Nearly 400 county leaders enhanced their leadership and management skills this week during continuing education training that Institute of Government faculty provided at the 2013 Capitol Connection Conference held in Atlanta by the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG).

Six full-day courses in the ACCG Commissioners Training Program, all taught by experts from the Institute, marked the first opportunity for county officials to gain continuing education credit through a Lifelong Learning Academy unveiled last year by the Institute and ACCG.

The academy offers commissioners foundational knowledge in key topics of county governance while also providing the opportunity for sustained development in a variety of specialized subjects.

Experts from the Institute provided training this week about how county governments operate, the legal issues commissioners face, budgeting and financial management, legal and practical aspects of personnel administration, and counties' public health and safety responsibilities. The training program also included a half-day seminar exploring how the 2012 elections are affecting county government, facilitated by a member of the Institute faculty.

The two-day conference also featured a series of legislative reports, including updates by Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and House Speaker David Ralston, breakout sessions on specific policy issues, and a keynote address by Gov. Nathan Deal.
