This three-day seminar focuses on grassroots civic education using Georgia state government as a case study. Political scientists, historians, and practitioners will make presentations and lead discussions. Teachers will discover effective ways to introduce state government into the classroom and learn new approaches for teaching. Seminar includes study visits to the State Capitol and the Georgia Supreme Court. Participating teachers receive two professional learning units (PLUs) while learning how to effectively bring state government instruction into the classroom.

LOGISTICS

The seminar is open to all social studies teachers, but it is particularly appropriate for middle and high school educators. The seminar is conducted at the Capitol Education Center in Atlanta. Participants must bring a photo ID in order to access the Capitol Education Center and other government buildings.

COST

There is no registration fee. The seminar is funded in part by a grant from the Georgia General Assembly. Parking, up to three nights lodging at the Holiday Inn Select Atlanta Capitol Conference Center (450 Capitol Avenue), lunches, and all instructional materials are covered. Participants are responsible for travel and remaining meals.

LODGING

Lodging is provided for participants who live more than 60 miles or must drive more than one hour to reach the Capitol Education Center. Only lodging for June 22, 23, and 24 at the Holiday Inn is covered. Only requests for lodging made on the registration form by June 1, 2008 will be honored. Participants who register to attend the seminar after June 1 will be responsible for making their own lodging arrangements.
