The UGA Carl Vinson Institute of Government’s Community Branding program, led by faculty member Kaitlin Messich, was awarded top honors in the Place category at the University Economic Development Association (UEDA) Awards of Excellence in October. This national award recognizes the institute’s tireless work in guiding communities across Georgia through a brand identity process, creating unique identities that help them prosper and grow.

“The branding program is a valuable partner in helping communities distinguish themselves with a unique visual signature that can support future opportunities and transformative change,” said Stacy Jones, vice president for Public Service and Outreach. “We are honored that Community Branding won a UEDA Award of Excellence and look forward to developing new ways to put UGA resources to work for Georgians.”

The UEDA Awards of Excellence winners were announced at the organization’s 2025 Annual Summit in early October. This prestigious award celebrates programs that represent outstanding economic development initiatives, research or accomplishments in the categories of talent, innovation, place and engaged university.

“It’s wonderful to be recognized for the impact Community Branding is making across Georgia. It’s a testament to the investment communities are making to improve their marketing and quality of life,” Messich said.

In addition to the UEDA award, the university is a finalist for The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities’ 2025 Innovation & Economic Prosperity (IEP) Awards, which recognize institutions for exemplary economic engagement. UGA’s submission highlights work across the state, including the Renaissance Strategic Visioning and Planning (RSVP) Program, and the Community Branding Program, housed in the Institute of Government, and the Archway Partnership’s extensive impact in Hartwell. The Renaissance Strategic Visioning and Planning (RSVP) process, led by faculty member Danny Bivins, has helped 25 Georgia communities revitalize their downtowns, generating over $500 million in investment. Community Branding has partnered with 16 communities to strengthen local identity and economic development since its launch. The Archway Partnership has completed over 100 projects in Hartwell over the last year, ranging from murals to health care and housing. These initiatives demonstrate UGA’s statewide impact and commitment to advancing economic growth, community vitality and innovation across Georgia.
